The photographer behind ‘Mama of the Week’

I’m often asked who the photographer is behind the ‘Mama of the Week’ photos so I thought I’d introduce Mel Cameron by sharing the story of how we met and how our business relationship has grown over the past year.

When I was pregnant with my now eighteen month old daughter Emilia, I dreamt of having some professional maternity photos to capture my baby bump and to one day share with Emilia.

I searched the internet to find the perfect photographer for me and came across Mel Cameron Photography based in Leongatha.

Her portfolio of maternity, newborn, wedding and lifestyle photos blew me away. The simplicity of her work emphasised the most important part of the photos; the family.

It was in that moment I knew I’d found a long term photographer and someone to capture the major upcoming milestones in our life so I contacted her and booked three photoshoots; maternity, newborn and wedding.

Mel was very warm and welcoming and she gave me a sense of comfort before I even met her which I felt was important because the upcoming photoshoots were very personal moments to my partner and I.

We first met at our property for our maternity shoot and she greeted us with a lovely smile. I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant and we went on the quad bike through the bush to find the perfect backdrop for our photos.

I later learnt she was a mother to three adorable children and a devoted wife. She also lived on a hobby farm and her passion for photography shone through.
“My beautiful Grandmother bought me my first SLR camera when I was fifteen years old and that’s where my love for photography started,” Mel shared.

I received my maternity photos promptly and they were everything I wanted and more so after we welcomed Emilia Maree into the world on 21st September 2016 we quickly organised her newborn photoshoot.

Mel was genuinely excited to meet Emilia because she had been on my journey to motherhood with me.

Emilia inspired me to create September Baby when she was just over four months old. What started as stocking some bamboo muslin swaddles and maize moses baskets turned into something so much more after I started the Mama of the Week series; an online community of mums and mums to be all around Australia.

I approached Mel to ask her if she would like to be apart of September Babys upcoming projects and I was over the moon when she agreed because I knew that each of our featured Mums would receive some beautiful family photos.

Mel and I are currently organising our fourth ‘Mama of the Week’ series and we have met some truly incredible women over the past year.

I’m honoured to write and share their stories and I’m extremely proud of what Mel captures in each of their photos; the incredible strength and pure love that they have for their gorgeous children.
